It's been over a month since the 2026 round of applications for new gTLDs closed but organisations are still announcing their submissions ahead of ICANN's full Reveal Day due next month. The Welsh county Isle of Anglesey made the surprise announcement that they would look to secure a more specific geoTLD than .wales for their village Llanfairpwllgwyngyll - they said they opted for the longer version of the village's name, Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, to avoid any confusion.
We will have to wait to see if Anglesey plan to market the TLD to locals but allow anyone to register a .llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch domain or if it will be restricted to those resident in or with a connection to Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. Currently anyone in the world can buy a .wales domain so if there are restrictions placed on .llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch registrations then it would limit the adoption of the TLD (to the approximately 3000 residents) but could give local organisations an air of prestige and exclusivity.
What we do know is that the county council would make use of the new TLD - they've confirmed that if the application is successful they already have plans in place to move their website from the anglesey.gov.wales domain to anglesey.lanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch and that going forward any emails would need to be directed to the contact@anglesey.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch mailbox.
It will also give the Visit Anglesey website the chance to move from its antiquated visitanglesey.co.uk address to the snappier and more modern visit.llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. At the time of publication, the county council had not responded to questions about the impact of these changes on the size of paper and the amount of ink required for marketing materials in the area.
